There are days where I believe I have the power, discipline, or sheer will to tame evil. I fall into the trap of convincing myself that even though my techniques have failed in the past; this time I have got it! Even though there isn’t a shred of evidence to support by arrogance and ignorance I blissfully approach life as if I can take it all on and win. The rise to glory is brief, very brief, and then I crash and burn yet again. Evil reigns supreme for the umpteenth time.
I wish that I was the only one who held this view but from the papers I am not alone. Charges fly as people claim their innocence. Addictions rage while people try to solve their problems. Life ranges while people are relentlessly confronted with wicked problems. Life is not simple, easy, or straight forward. It is as if one needs to be a specialist to plot the path for life. Taming evil is not an option most of us can afford in this scenario.
Or is it?
Perhaps my approach is patterned after the worlds. Maybe I am missing the obvious. There is a suggestion that is basic, fundamental, and easy to follow. If there is I would like to suggest it is the following.
First, realize that only God can grab “the Dragon, that old Snake—the very Devil, Satan himself!” (Revelation 20.1) You and I cannot handle the beast. There is no doubt in this matter. Our self esteem is not defined by victory. We, you and I, simply cannot handle Evil.
Second, the challenge isn’t about eliminating bad stuff. Do you realize that by applying the techniques and disciplines in our life we are merely creating needs, cravings, and desires? Life isn’t about denial; life is about experiencing and living!
Third, the winning technique is to fill one’s life with God things, personal growth and learning, giving compassion and mercy to others, and resting in God’s presence, so that God will deal with the junk.
Easy? No, but life saving.
