The setting is not normally conducive to survival, much less growth. The bonsai stood as a witness to what could happen. One might think that the odds in life automatically dictate the outcome. This plant, with support and nurture, defied the odds. I considered its healthy state and silently said thank you to the individuals who had been faithful caretakers. Each, in her/his own way, contributed to the moment.
As I remember and look forward to today, I find myself thinking of my calling to be a gardener. Life is a field of individuals, each with needs, benefiting from the gifts of its caretakers. There are times when it seems like no care is needed. Experience reminds me that even the heartiest of God’s trees benefit from the presence of those who enjoy their fruits and share.
Sustained care and support are game changers. Life is more than a single event. The gift of friends who are always here when I need them infuses my heart with hope. I see each as a hero, following an old model where s/he is “faithful in everything God gave him to do. [as] Moses was also faithful.” (Hebrews 3.2). Their involvement in my life changes the way I grow. With each gift they leave with me, I am stronger. Their presence opens a door to finding the courage within.
My role expands with the support and attention to detail others bring. Initially, I understood mentoring as an offer by another to take on a heavy load. I thought they would do the heavy lifting while I tagged along. With time, I began to appreciate that their involvement in my life gave me the strength to take on life’s greatest challenges. I was responsible for the heavy lifting. After everything they gifted me, it was my life and my responsibility! By taking the lead in the words and actions my freedom brought, I could stand on my own. Their gifts make it all possible.
In receiving the gifts of others, I hear a calling to give and share without attachment.
