When one competes in a drag race, much of the race is decided at the line. In the UAE, for reasons unknown, many never get to the line at a stop light. Anywhere from half to several car lengths is usual. Given the aggressiveness in other driving areas, the created space makes little sense to my thinking. It sometimes looks as if the drivers are respecting an imaginary painted box space at the front for scooters and motorcycles, Taiwanese style. As I wondered and imagined, life’s whispers took advantage of the quietness within me to offer lessons that echo as I start today.
As important as the first step can be, having a plan is the priority. From running in the past to acting without thinking in the presence of doubt, it is easy to lose sight of what reflection can bring to the moment. Looking back, I am reminded of how important planning is in a drag race and beyond. A wisdom writer reminds me that “Jesus’ priestly work far surpasses what these other priests do, since he’s working from a far better plan.” (Hebrews 8.6)
Life is revealed in the race we run. Reaction time, tyre condition, and mental preparation can be an advantage. It is easy to get lost in the advantages others bring to the line. This is never the story. Our story is revealed in our readiness and everything that follows. I imagine I am at the line, competing against the best, only to realise that the best is me. In the intensity at the start, when everything is on the line, I often sacrifice my values and priorities to the god of immediacy. In the quietness of the morning, I see and hear of options.
We are at the line. Living comes through choices, decisions, and actions. With our freedom, it is our race to run. I want mine to be filled with intentional care, considered kindness, and flexible compassion. In short, I want to accept, forgive, and support myself and others. I can feel the engines. Carpe diem!
