Years ago, as I worked on a complex and intense project with support from outside consultants, I heard a seemingly bizarre suggestion. We had just achieved a small milestone early in what was going to be a very long journey. In context, I did not see it as monumental or especially difficult. So, when the suggest was “let’s celebrate”, I was confused.
“Why?”
“Celebrating is recognizing each step forward. It strengthens, heals, and encourages us as we look up and forward. Most importantly, it helps us remember in the times which will come when one doubts and wrestles with darkness.”
We celebrated that night and I have never forgotten what I see as a wisdom lesson.
When one achieves a goal, takes a step forward, act on one’s success. I find wrapping my heart around this lesson in the following ways.
With each successful outcome, take time to reflect and consciously file the memory in one’s mind and heart. Note the way you feel. Capture the detail on what it took to get here. See and let your emotions feel as much as possible in the moment at hand.
Act on the new foundation. It is bigger and better than what it was before! Take a step with the confidence that comes in recognizing it for what it is. When the psalmist called Divinity to the heart of worship, his call to action is a model we can use in our own lives; “Up, God, enjoy your new place of quiet repose, you and your mighty covenant ark.” (Psalm 132.8)
Use the lessons, insights and understanding which come with each step as an opportunity to reframe the future. You know more. You have healing wounds and memories of the effort you put into the step. Perhaps there is a better way to take the next step. There will be lessons which one can use.
Celebrations are great moments to look in all directions and revel in being exactly where you are! It is in the moment we have now where opportunity resides. Seize the day!
