The lull between Christmas and New Years always seems like a twilight zone. Many have taken the time off as a holiday with today marking the transition from the season of giving to the time of celebrating. Others are getting back into the daily grind. Their bodies are present, but somehow their hearts are a long way off. We are already looking for the next break only days away!
Like many things in life, timing is everything. The opportunity to return the strange and unwanted Christmas gifts is here. The season of keeping the permanent smile on your face is gently passing. The annual window for serious reflection is opening.
What do we want the New Year to be like? Are we looking to repeat our current steps or work through the hurdles and get on with life?
It is easy to get complacent. Work is there, for good or for worse. Relationships are what they are; it seems difficult to change established patterns. God is here; however, God often seems rather distant on some days. Can we really change anything?
God is working with you and I to restore us to our full potential. The challenge he has is not with the material, as flawed as that might be! The struggle lies totally within you and I. We do not really want his help or his work within us. We always want to do it all on our own!
People's lives tell and retell the reality of the struggle. You find them in the Bible, in the people who live next door, and even in your own journey. In the past, the truth was limited to a select group. With the Cross, everything is changed. “All the nations of the world can now know the truth.” (Romans 16.26)
The question is what are we going to do. The time for us to take a decision is now. The strange part of this is that we have the opportunity to remake this decision as often as we like and at least daily. Time will not wait.
