One can’t wait until you know with absolute confidence before making a decision. Life doesn’t seem to work that way. Far too many decisions are like swinging any racquet at an object. You see, measure, anticipate, imagine, and swing. You are never 100% sure of your judgment. Even if making relationship decision it is much more about what one feels instead of absolute fact. With time your confidence may seem like fact, at least until something tears the framework of your belief away.
I was asked to be part of a complex integration months ago. It is natural to say with time at my back that the process was easy, almost automatic. Candidly it was filled with doubts, fears, and uncertainties. I wasn’t really sure what the right answer was for even the simple questions! Far too many variable, unknowns, and untested elements were playing before my eyes to give me any level of confidence in the decisions I needed to make. In the end it all came down to trust. Whom did I trust?
Others involved in the same process faced similar challenges. The right choices appeared hidden in the midst of total chaos. As decisions approached “they waffled: ‘Why don't you give us a clue about who you are, just a hint of what's going on? When we see what's up, we'll commit ourselves. Show us what you can do.’” (John 6.30) As time went on, the number of decisions slowed to a virtual standstill.
So far the strategy of wait, do nothing, postpone appears to be the wrong one! The decisions taken in faith are moving some forward into a new realm of teamwork, fresh opportunities, and confidence. It isn’t that the first decisions were the final ones; rather that the early steps gave others the confidence in one’s commitment which in turn freed them to engage fully and completely.
Making a choice to God can be difficult. Life is full of conflicting needs and opportunities. The challenge is simple; with God one cannot wait to decide. Our choice today is a decision.
