A favourite movie line is, “Every man should know his limitations.” As much as I like the idea of challenging myself to embrace what others can do with and for me, there is a dark spot in this phrase which, to me, suggests that there is a limit to what I can do. I am sure there is. I am equally sure that whatever this limit is, it is beyond anything I can imagine.
The store signage caught my eye, “Just Over The Top”. The multi-coloured clothing packs metaphorically took me to a place where all colours, persuasions, and preferences came together and formed a wall that represented the best we could be. I found myself leading an age-old cheer; “People of all nations, celebrate God! All colors and races, give hearty praise!” (Romans 15.11)
In my morning reflection at the beginning of a new part of my story, I listen to the words that continue to echo from my picture of the store’s signage.
We are stronger together. This is not a commentary on my weakness. It is an enduring awareness that when I collaborate with others, so much more is possible. Divinity gives me hope when all I see is darkness. Others can see what I cannot. When my strengths are leveraged with another’s, we can do what nobody imagined.
Difficult moments, as painful, overwhelming, and debilitating as they might be, never last the length of time that I think they will while I am dealing with them. Experience reminds me that the deepest darkness, a terrifying moment in a dark night of my soul, changes in an instant when a candle of hope is lit. Endurance always seems to come with Courage and together they give birth to Hope. When Hope is not found within, others often share it as a gift.
I know there are limits. I also they are not the ones I can see. Together, with Divinity and others on the way, we will reach beyond the top. With an open heart and soul, so much more is possible.
