Everything was in order last night; in bed on time, clothes for the morning laid out in fresh arrangements, and all pending issues resolved. Whitney had all the right ingredients for a good and complete nights rest. Somehow, things never work out how, no matter how detailed one tries to plan!
I know exactly how Whitney feels. This morning the alarm went off at 6:30 and she slept on. Cherry woke Whitney at 6:35, 6:45, and dragged her out of bed at 7:00 to a long slow count to three. Whitney, in an act of desperation, locked herself in the bathroom where Cherry found her asleep at 7:15, trapped by a overwhelming sense of tiredness.
I feel trapped by life, overwhelmed by deliverables, smothered by conflicting priorities, and slowly dying due to an increasing number of failed commitments. I do not think that my feelings are unique; we all face the same dilemma. Life is extremely busy, everybody wants something from us, we cannot accomplish what we want done, information is coming from every corner, and life just is not working out! We feel trapped in the corner by things in our control, locked by things well beyond our reach.
God offers you and I an alternative that seems too good to be true. As strongly and firmly as I know the gift to be true and factual, I equally feel captured by life, unable to grasp and understand God’s lifeline. How can we break the cycle? How does one reach and grasp what continues to be a mystery? Where do we find understanding and direction?
The answer lies not in understanding but in doing, in being. “Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and fulltime – remember, you’ve been raised from the dead! – into God’s way of doing things. Sin can’t tell you how to live. After all, you’re not living under that old tyranny any longer. You’re living in the freedom of God.” (Romans 6.13,14) In pursuing our true destiny – being God’s hands, and feet – we discover our destiny! We find freedom and heaven now, living as God’s children.
