I watched the kids playing with increasing interest.  The kids were free in the moment, giving, taking, and loving life as it is.  They represented a wide range of cultures, backgrounds, and languages.  Their differences were not a deterrent to the enjoyment each was having.

I found myself wondering what it would take for everything would go on endlessly.  I imagined what others could do, food, snacks, and a variety of additions that would let the kids go on in the world of their creation.  Looking back, I can see the doubts that were always lurking close by.  Any one of them could change the dynamic.  The smallest of slights, intentional or accidental, could turn the extraordinary atmosphere into a toxic mess.  While I wished it would go on, my heart reminded me that this was as good as it was going to get.

My vision ignored other possibilities.

The sound of someone unpacking and setting up a table nearby caught my attention.  I turned to watch, wondering what was going on.  Much to my surprise, a boom box came out and music filled the air.  It was clear everyone was surprised!  The music was fun, lively, and a perfect supplement to everything that was going on.

The scream of the kids caught my attention.  The playing had morphed into a great chaos of kids dancing in ways only they could imagine.  Laughter, craziness, and hope filled everyone nearby.  It was a wonderful twist that caught everyone over the age of ten by surprise.

I watched and wondered what I have lost with age.  Am I willing to dance at a moment’s notice?  Would I put myself out on the edge like the kids?  I hope so but I am still wondering.  A writer spoke of God as if Divinity were the music from the boom box; “Your ozone-drenched garments are fragrant with mountain breeze. Chamber music – from the throne room – makes you want to dance.” (Psalm 45.8)

I am sure God was smiling with me watching the kids.  Today is day for dancing.
