Changes in directions are not always felt at the time. In many circumstances, they are only understood after the fact. To see them coming one needs a combination of visuals, changes in senses, and other stimuli that alert one’s awareness that something is different. Things have or are changing.
Pilots like to remind me that they ignore their senses and rely on instruments to give them the facts of change. If the instruments do not tell me the plane is changing, it is not! On the other hand, if the instruments tell me a story of change, no matter what I feel, see, or might think, I know the plane is changing.
In my life, there are very few changes that come with an absolute assurance things are different. Additionally, it is difficult to know what the change means; what new direction and ultimately destination am I headed to? I find myself looking for indicators, life’s telltales, to give me a sense of the change and reasons for it as well as the new direction that will follow.
The telltales of a change in direction are all around me. Reminders that I am holding onto include the following.
Be aware. This is not the time for sleeping. Staying alert, reflective, and rested are all helpful. Actively feel the thirst for awareness. Follow the calling of old; “Hear the shouts, hear the triumph songs in the camp of the saved? ‘The hand of God has turned the tide!’” (Psalm 118.15)
Live in the moment with a degree of caution on whether the change is, in the greater story, good or bad. Where possible and appropriate, avoid categorizing turns are perfect or final. There may be more to come.
Have faith in the values and priorities closest to your heart. Each has stood the test of time. One has evidence of the destinations they lead to. In the pressure and excitement of a turn, trust truth. Love, community, and compassion are friends one should always keep close!
Life’s roller coaster is fun and scary. One is always turning.
