Changing course sounds far easier than it is. When one thinks of Singapore today, the images always includes diversity, innovation, change, drive, and competition. If one is looking, there are easy proof statements for any positive statement one might make on those subjects. Singaporeans are driven, competition, and always looking to make money, be first, and win. Singapore as a country consistently invests in improving its infrastructure, quality of life, and ability of its residents to educate themselves and be successful. As incredible as this sounds, and it is, I can remember the day when nothing along these lines would or could be said with any truth.
Making a turn in life takes more than information. There is ample evidence that “we” – individual, communities, and even countries, need to be doing something different. We know that we need to change. We understand that the past is not sustainable. There is a thirst for more but the lingering question is always how.
We are not the first to ask this question. Each generation asks the same of themselves and of their relationship with God. The dialogue with God is not that complex.
“'But how do we return?'
'Begin by being honest. Do honest people rob God? But you rob me day after day.'
You ask, 'How have we robbed you [God]?'
'The tithe and the offering-that's how! And now you're under a curse -the whole lot of you-because you're robbing me. Bring your full tithe to the Temple treasury so there will be ample provisions in my Temple. Test me in this and see if I don't open up heaven itself to you and pour out blessings beyond your wildest dreams. For my part, I will defend you against marauders, protect your wheat fields and vegetable gardens against plunderers.'” (Malachi 3.8-11)
You and I have plenty of information. We know what our hearts are telling us. Our answers will be made by what we do today with that knowledge. We hold the keys. Everything changes in the moment at hand. Life is full of opportunities.
