Stuff can blind you. The strike can come from odd and unexpected paces; a bully on an otherwise quiet and peaceful subway, a random driver’s rage on a busy and flowing freeway and even the surprise anger out of the blue from a friend. While each incident by itself may be something one can deal with, given time, repeated random occurrences, and no identifiable cause, I often find myself struggling with uncertainty. Life can be fully of muddy puddles. Life can be like a bowl of jelly. I can question everything I know to be true.
In the midst of life, it is easy to find one’s self caught up in the swirls. The very people, institutions, and things you rely on can and do fail. Is there anything one can trust without uncertainty? Does evil always win in the short term? Downing may seem inevitable, but is it?
The fact that we are uncertain is natural. Reasons and causes abound. In the midst of this is a quiet, reassuring, promise. It is God’s voice. “Don't be afraid, and don't worry: Haven't I always kept you informed, told you what was going on? You're my eyewitnesses: Have you ever come across a God, a real God, other than me? There's no Rock like me that I know of.” (Isaiah 44.8)
On a given day, every, anything we know can be brought into question. The fact that we find ourselves questioning the truths we hold closest to our hearts should not be something that holds us hostage. The irony found in how quickly we forget God’s hand in our lives does not need to determine how we see the moment at hand. We will always find uncertainty haunting our lives. We will often find ourselves struggling with uncertainty’s power. There will be times where we see uncertainty winning out over hope. These facts do not determine how we live the moment at hand.
God is present in your life and mine. Hope is in a battle with uncertainty, fear, and doubts. I choose Hope. I choose Life.
