The men’s bathroom has two sinks. More accurately, it had one sink. The second sink was functioning as a plant holder. By all appearances, the sink had been in this state for some time. The plant was thriving. The location looked semi-permanent. The setting was easy to understand, even though there was no signage or indication that the sink was not serving any purpose other than fulfilling its original design.
I do not always understand the moment at hand. For many reasons, the setting can be confusing, individuals may act out of character, or my thinking is not in the moment. Whatever the reason, understanding and knowing are nowhere near the setting. As I start a new day, I am unsure. There are multiple meetings planned. The agendas are both known and unknown. There is one certainty. I know I must be fully present, open, and curious in all cases. As I look ahead, I can hear Life whispering reminders to guide me along the way.
Presuming a singular way of thinking is not my best starting point. Curiosity, openness, and empathy allow me to see more. The old observation remains true today; “There is no way of understanding this in terms of the old Levitical priesthood,” (Hebrews 7.13). I look away from myself and see others through their eyes, hearts, and souls. I am struck by the experiences that shape their priorities and values.
The story in each moment is filled with unique characters. The moment is far bigger than me. Each moment includes the experiences of everyone present, their hopes and dreams, and their longings. As I create space for others, I find opportunities for my compassion and caring.
One does not know all the answers in advance. Many will need to be discovered as the moment unfolds. In creating space for Divinity to be present, I find myself opening a door for love and kindness to be fully present. A revelation in understanding and responding to the call to action.
The day is open. The signs and guides are everywhere. Time to live.
