I have found a truism in my journey with God. I have also discovered “doubt” when I discuss it with others, unless I am already holding a strong gift of trust from the person I am in conversation with. It is a simple observation. God works with each of us. We may not understand the process, it may never be completely clear. Yet with intent, reflection, and openness, God can, will, and does guide us along life’s path.
This observation didn’t come to me easily. The problem wasn’t with Divinity, my personal views kept getting in the way! I knew God would instruct. I also know how, when, and in what direction. As I often remind you, I can be so wrong. God’s directions often take a different direction from mine. They reflect different priorities. They even focus on different aspect of the human experience.
Additionally, it is hard to let the simple disciplines in life determine the way forward. When I hear someone saying that I should “listen to me now. Give me your closest attention. Do farmers plow and plow and do nothing but plow? Or harrow and harrow and do nothing but harrow? After they've prepared the ground, don't they plant? Don't they scatter dill and spread cumin, plant wheat and barley in the fields and raspberries along the borders? They know exactly what to do and when to do it. Their God is their teacher.” (Isaiah 28.23-26) I find myself arguing with the testimony.
My testimony is simply this. Do you want to know God? Open your heart to God and you will discover God is already waiting to be realized in your heart. Would you like to understand who and what God is? Open yourself up to God’s words – in nature, community, and in the Words Divinity left for our use. Is walking with God attractive? There is a choice present in each moment; we can turn towards or away from God. We can live in community or by ourselves. We can exercise compassion or worship self. It’s our choice.
