Consuming an unknown cold coffee in the late afternoon is unsettling. One does not know the impact on one’s stomach, metabolism, and demeanour. With so many unknowns, there is no way to anticipate the future confidently. Outcomes, consequences, and repercussions are beyond one’s sight. Even as I indulged, I considered Life’s observations and warning whispers.
Fears, doubts, and uncertainties are often shared and universal. As the unknowns in my head moved from inside to an open discussion, I realised others were with me. We shared more than we realised. While our answers differed, there was room to reach across, be supportive, and step forward together. I thought I was alone, only to see that “Even Moses was terrified.” (Hebrews 12.21) What started as my challenge became ours, morphing from a challenge to a decision that could be made without judgment.
Courage is infectious. As our conversation jumped into coffee late in the day, it expanded into a dialogue about health, exercise, and holistic care. Fears were voiced. Insights shared. Experiments discussed. Progress was celebrated. It was fun to walk together through a conversation about caring for oneself. I did not sense judgment. There were no agendas at play. It was two friends walking together, thinking aloud, and learning with each step we took. I ended up with a more complete view of my own. I also had an invitation to support his plans in the coming days.
One step is part of the journey. We knew it was not the beginning or the end. It was a meaningful conversation that each of us was looking for. What would things be like if every conversation I had was like that? This morning, I woke up knowing I could proactively do my part. I could be vulnerable along the way. I could share my courage without an agenda.
Today’s lessons build on yesterday and the day before. There is more to learn. I can be more than I was, moving forward in my journey to becoming a better man. Curiosity will be key to what I can see.
