I stood looking at a scene that transcended centuries. Columns from the Roman era dominated the foreground. Beyond the columns, I could see a church that is likely as old as the Crusades. In between the columns is a modern building reflecting the design influences of times past. History, past and present, dominated my thinking while my reflection could not escape the feeling that I was on the verge of something new.
The feeling of being very close to a new awareness has been growing for some time. In hindsight, I can see the early seeds in a conversation and in a pitch originally drafted three years ago. As I reviewed it recently, the ideas of care and kindness dominated every decision, each design, ways of working, and even how one lives, reasserted themselves. It is not that the idea is new. It is the role each plays in living a humanity-centred life. I realize now that the story of Rome, the Middle Ages, and today was never just about an individual, it was always about the community.
Life is increasingly on edge. Conversations, nature, and conflict are increasingly sharp and painful. The idea that care, collaboration, and community take precedence seems at odds with the reality of any given day. Whatever restraints were holding things in check, have been released. Something has changed with the old perspectives; “Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in” (Romans 8.20)
Life is an opportunity. In every generation, there are moments inviting a new response. I hear the call for young and old, the powerful as well as those at risk, to embrace care and kindness. I can redefine what constitutes a life well lived. I can use care and kindness to measure my success.
Each moment is an opportunity to be successful. Yes, there is a destination in my mind. I believe in the journey from here to there, care and kindness are the most effective guides to reach my destination – a life well lived. Seize the day with caring through kindness.
