As I work on the launch of a new company, in my mind, I repeatedly hear the echo of a good friend and amazing artist. I find myself constantly surprised by the ways his creativity has touched my mind and heart. As I think of his words, with apologies to him if I have gone in a direction he did not imagine or intend, I find myself reflecting on the following.
An artist is an artist because s/he has an overwhelming desire to do what they do. It is never for or about anyone else. It is, always, at its heart an incredibly personal expression. The fact that one expresses themselves through art is not a choice, is something uncontrollable, undeniable, and unavoidable that comes from deep within one’s self.
Form follows function. My way of hearing this is to always start with why; how and what will follow. As I focus on my message, the intent of my heart, form follows. Even now, as I close my eyes and see the images that emerged from his heart, I am filled with hope and a sense of possibilities.
Less is more. Simplicity always trumps complexity. Understanding trumps overwhelming the senses. The outcome that is as minimal as possible, consumable and understandable is always stronger and will last longer than something that is more.
Pay attention to the details yet always remember the picture. Appreciate them. Enjoy them. You can even revel in them. One warning; details are not the whole picture. The picture is more than the sum of its parts.
In looking beyond myself and the work ahead, I see so much more. Old words take on new meaning; “You make grass grow for the livestock, hay for the animals that plow the ground. Oh yes, God brings grain from the land,” (Psalm 104.14) Bits of data, forms of technology, and the simplicity of design form the foundation of a much bigger picture.
We have a great opportunity to bring the unimaginable to life. The potential outcome a gift of inspiration from one to another.
