There are those who think they can exercise by sitting on the couch. I know Cherry thinks I am one of those people but I don’t think I really believe that. Others do, or at least they appear to. During the past week I have walked, walked, and walked some more. By the end of each day I was totally exhausted. The steps individually seemed a good idea at the time but I am not sure I was ready for the outcome. The experience has reminded me of running in the old days and left me with a thirst for more.
Experience is a great teacher. It is ironic that I seemed determined to forget yesterday as quickly as it passes, losing the chance to remember, reflect, and grow. By the headlines it seems as if I am not alone. Failed relationships, broken trust, and extraordinary prices paid in lives all reflect the ignorance in which many of us walk. It is as if history has never existed! Nothing of yesterday’s experiences applies today. Everything is new. Life is to be created with no links to our fathers and their fathers. How forgetful can we be? How much are will willing to pay to recreate yesterday’s pain? Astonishingly and shockingly extremes seem to be the norm.
I found as I walked the streets, reflecting on the lessons of yesterday that my Teacher has been speaking to me far more than I have been listening. On these nights I found myself listening with an intensity I didn’t know existed. The stories were awesome, truths obvious, and experience humbling. I need to do this far more than I ever realized.
It is easy to forget that you and I travel through life with a Teacher who comforts, consoles, and teaches. The Teacher was commissioned, “when the Friend I plan to send you from the Father comes—the Spirit of Truth issuing from the Father—he will confirm everything about me.” (John 15.26) The experience is available. Take a walk, listen and reflect; discover what God has to say.
