The construction site was quiet, eerily so in the stillness of the night. There were no workers, lights, or any sounds of what was behind the wall. The warning sign was clear, visually and in two languages! While I could not see behind the tall fence, I automatically kept my distance given the stark warning and sense of vulnerability.
As I walked, I wondered how many warning signs had been posted along my path where I passed by in blissful ignorance. Knowing what I know now, what would I share with others still in the early stages of their journey? Would I echo the frustrated writer looking back? “I hate life. As far as I can see, what happens on earth is a bad business. It’s smoke – and spitting into the wind.” (Ecclesiastes 2:17)
Life is not defined by darkness, pain, or despair; it is far more than that. Is life filled with bad business? Absolutely, yes! It can be ugly, exploitive, and chaotic. Our lives can be defined by the difference we make, starting within ourselves. With each embrace of acceptance, my action changes the world one person at a time. With each word of kindness, I bring light to a dark place. With each caring action, I leave evidence of hope.
Life is a battle that never seems to end. I know I am called to be a warrior in this struggle. I am confident of victory when everything is over, even though it means I may pay the price for standing up against evil between now and then. There is a larger story at play. I do not always see it. At times, I do not think I understand it. The one thing I know is my calling to make a difference.
Life is an opportunity to bring beauty, awe, and wonder to each moment. I can nurture and lift what is good within the rubble and waste. I can comfort and support those in need, regardless of where and how we find each other. In caring, I can make a difference.
