Singapore is situated between far more islands and land than one might imagine. To Singapore's north and east are pieces of Malaysia. To its south, west are islands of Indonesia. As one flies over the island, it is easy to see how congested the seaways are! Big and small ships crowd into the relatively narrow sea lanes. There is one benefit; whatever exposure Singapore has to the “big” wave is reduced because of its neighbors. They will always take the brunt of the wave first. If Singapore had a choice on where it was going to be, it is hard to imagine a more strategic and yet still safe position.
As I look at the choices in my life, I realize I often put myself in harm's way. I seem to have blindly assumed that Divinity will protect me, regardless of my choice or intent. The God I know does not seem to be willing to accept this premise – from me or anyone else! At one point in history a writer notes that “God wasn't at all pleased; but he let them do it their way, worship every new god that came down the pike-and live with the consequences, consequences described by the prophet Amos: Did you bring me offerings of animals and grains those forty wilderness years, O Israel? Hardly. You were too busy building shrines to war gods, to sex goddesses, worshiping them with all your might. That's why I put you in exile in Babylon.” (Acts 7.42, 43) I would do well to paid head to the story of others in anticipation of my own.
I know there are actions I can take that will bring my actions into harmony with God. First, I can intentionally rest and be in God's presence. It is listening to God that I will hear truth. It is in sitting before God that I will experience truth. It is in letting God rest within me that I will be changed from the inside out.
Life waves will come. God offers to surround your life and mine.
