Definitions of whirlpools include a variation of Google’s definition; “quickly rotating mass…which objects may be drawn, typically caused by the meeting of conflicting currents.” As recent events have reminded me, many, myself included, create personal whirlpools that draw us into a conflicting mass of aspirations, reality, and opportunities. To those looking to play it safe, I hear their words of judgement. They demand that one be “punished for defying God’s Word, for turning your back on the High God’s counsel.” (Psalm 107.11) To those trying to live to the maximum the quiet question is left unanswered; is it more important to love and give than it is to be doing what others say is right?
Last night I reflected on the life of someone that passed through far too quickly. In many ways he lived life bigger and larger than most. Coming from nothing, in face of unending hurdles and barriers, he achieved what few thought possible. Along the way, there was a good side as well as a side filled with weaknesses.
I knew he had his critics. Living life hard, way beyond the edge most considered safe, was part of what defined him. I was struck by the outpouring of people that he touched. Deserving and less so, powerful as well as individuals struggling to be in control, there were representatives from so many walks of life.
In an age where we have far too many judges, let me suggest the following.
Living breathing love that is displayed through consistent unselfish action is the greatest gift we can offer to friends and strangers alike.
Being willing to embrace those around you, where and as they are, reinforces love and gives birth to hope. In this action, one steps from being amazing into the circle of legendary.
Life is fragile and uncertain. Tomorrow is the future. Life is lived in the present. Seize the day! Do something with what you have in the context that you find yourself.
Life’s whirlpools are natural jails filled with potential opportunities. RIP – you showed us how to live.
