The process of stepping back into the world is, candidly, overwhelming. A lot is going on! My initial thought was simply that the barriers were uniquely mine. Yet, the world as we all knew it twelve months ago is radically different while being, at the core, the same. Our financial markets have changed. I do not think anyone quite knows how, why, or to what end. All we know is that banks, investment houses, and financial services are in a very different space than they were before. Our view of the world has and is shifting. Traditionalists are not longer sure if traditions will continue. Conservatives despair that values are being abandoned. Those dying for change are desperate for something, anything to happen! Everyone is struggling to live with forever changing uncertainty. The future is chaotically fuzzy, even to the optimists among us.
Where does this leave you or me? When I slow down for a bit, the answer is blindly obvious. We are in the same place we were yesterday, a month ago, and a year ago. You and I sit in the moment at hand. With certainty, the only thing we know with confidence is what is right now. That may not seem like much however it is as much as we have ever had. The wonder and beauty of today's chaos is that we actually know that we do not know. Yesterday we thought we did and it turns out we did not. Today we do not know, and guess what, we are right.
In many ways, there is a lingering question on the table. We have been called to be in the present. I find myself wondering like Peter, because 'the minute I was sent for, I came, no questions asked. But now I'd like to know why you sent for me.'” (Acts 10.29) Why are we here?
I believe your answer lies in the same conversation that mine does – with God. God's whisper is in your life and mine. I know compassion, love, and engagement are part of the words.
