Winded

“I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from the mountains? No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.” Psalm 121.1

My squash game last night carried every opportunity for fun and excitement. I came into the game confident of victory against my young opponent knowing there would be good sportsmanship, hard hitting, aggressive on court tactics, and thoughtful strategies. I knew my maturity, wisdom, and inner resolve to win would carry the day. Forty-five minutes later I faced the harsh reality as my dream bubbled dripped through my clothes onto the floor.

I never looked at a fundamental factor before the game. What is my energy source and how deep is it? I relied on my own abilities. I trusted my strength. I looked to my inner willpower. I even prepared for the match by hydrating days in advance. I left my strength dripping on the floor, unable to control any aspect of the game.

Now on the morning after with a good night of sleep to help my recovery, I see how consistently I approach squash and life. I approach life each day in good sportsmanship (do the right thing even if it hurts), hard hitting (forceful but fair), aggressive tactics (work effectively), and thoughtful strategies (know how decisions fit into the long-term). Additionally I tend to trust my strength, rely on my abilities, and look to my inner willpower. The result is the same. I leave my efforts on the floor, unable to achieve my life purpose.

In squash and in life, I lose my wind easily and often.

There is only one solution. Find the right source of power! In squash, my source of power is training and increasing my physical reserves. In life, my source of power rests in God. Anything else ultimately comes back to my self, and I know that does not work! The Psalmist got it! “I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from the mountains? No, my strength comes from God…”

Our solution is here, grab it!
