I have been fortunate. At several points in my life, actually far more than I realized at the time, friends have been willing to be God’s voice in my life. There is something wonderful, unique, and frightening when it happens.
I vividly remember an incident around 6:30 on a Sunday morning as I drove with a friend to play racquetball. We didn’t know each other well enough to delve into our personal lives, or so I thought. His words began with, “I feel compelled to confront you about…” I knew instantly it was the Spirit confronting me. I had known of the issue for some time, yet I had not, would not, perhaps could not deal with it. As God’s voice filled the car and my heart I knew my life and relationships would pivot on my response.
I didn’t realize at the time how God would, again and again, choose to talk to me through people I was open to. In a new church in London God’s voice came again, confront, calling, and comforting me when I needed it most. Later in a dusty airport, a devout Hindu again called me home to God. As I look back, I can see God speaking in way and places I never anticipated, couldn’t have imagined, and often did not consider possible. I am convinced God spoke then. I also believe God speaks now to you and me.
Some believe as in times past that God only communicates through intermediaries. People would often go looking for a word; “King Hezekiah's servants came to Isaiah. Isaiah said, ‘Tell your master this: ‘God's Message: Don't be upset by what you've heard, all those words the servants of the Assyrian king have used to mock me. I personally will take care of him. I'll arrange it so that he'll get a rumor of bad news back home and rush home to take care of it. And he'll die there. Killed—a violent death.’’” (Isaiah 37.5-7)
God’s voice is alive – in your life and mine. We can hear, experience, live Divinity’s words.
