Not.
Sometimes the simplest words mean far more than they mean. The communication transcends tone, body language, and even intent. The difference comes in the combination of messenger and receiver; when both come together and build on each other, the result is one of linking hearts. It is in these moments one knows words are not just words. Words are vehicles of hope, transports of opportunity, and messengers of the heart. We use them, often oblivious of their impact.
It should be obvious but until you see the interaction between others it is easy to lose the connection. Recently a friend of a friend suffered a heart attack. The first conversation brought all my emotions and compassion to high alert! This is someone a good friend really cares about. He was and is fearful yet with hope. I found myself caught in the relationship, sensing that I was meeting a new member of my extended family. It is a good feeling. I can pray, reflect, and hold him up in my walk, trusting God to continue to work in his life. I know my words may be seem by some as just words but they are much more than that.
As I watch the interaction of others I find myself discovering invitations from a wide range of people to engage in the heart of living. It is as if Mary’s response to Jesus at the tomb is my response. “Jesus said, ‘Mary.’
Turning to face him, she said in Hebrew, ‘Rabboni!’ meaning “Teacher!’” (John 20.16)
Today is another day in the big City. It is far too easy to find the “self” caught in the rush of getting things done, working the angles, and seizing the opportunities. Yet in the midst of everything there are conversations, opportunities to engage, and words. You and I can be a difference. We can deliver hope where there are questions, compassion where justice prevails, and acceptance instead of judgment. We can engage. It is more than just words, it is compassion, wonder, and awe realized. It is time.
