Walking into the dark and well-used alleys of the Meena Fruit and Vegetable Markets is a step into a different world. With refrigerated rooms, hand trucks on the move, and busyness with purpose, I always know I am in a place where I am not the expert. I have come to appreciate the recommendations shared on request from those who work here. Restaurant buyers, occasionally chefs, and people who care about what is served in their homes mingle with staff who are usually very patient. Every individual knows something I do not.
I start today looking out over the water towards the market. My breakfast will include an avocado selected by the expert who works in my favourite distributor. As I consider his gifts to my life, Life’s Whispers remind me of today’s guideposts.
Everyone can contribute. As the busyness, everyone has something s/he can do. There are many roles and specialties. The person who knows about fruit may not be an expert in vegetables. Some carry an awareness of what their business customers are looking for. Others take care of the cash register.
Opportunities have a shelf life. The fruits and vegetables will not last forever. The goal is to match fruits and vegetables with those who put them to use. I see a chef in action, reminded of the importance of those to can see the big picture through passionate eyes and a willingness to make it work. As I look at the items in boxes and on display, my mind is thinking of the possibilities. I know what is here today may not be tomorrow.
We all meet as equals. Yes, we are different. The admonition from old still rings true; “Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do. And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with – even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department. Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently.” (Romans 14.1)
