“If I keep my eyes on God I won’t trip over my own feet.” Psalm 25.15
London is a town for walking, small at its center with twisting streets and alleys. On evenings with a light fog, damp weather, and dim streetlights I find myself right back in the 19th century world of Sherlock Holmes.
Traversing the streets is an adventure waiting to get better. The ongoing challenge is navigating the small ridges, pitfalls, steps, puddles, and other obstacles. London is an old city where everything is either in the process of falling apart in a state of constant repair.
How can one navigate safely? There are two keys.
Directions are easy; use an “A to Z” or ask. Londoners are, in general, collegial, helpful, and kind when responding to people in distress.
Attitude is a bit more difficult. Attitude involves walking with confidence. Attitude assumes that when you stub you foot, trip over your other shoe, or step in a puddle that this event is only a minor set back on the road to your destination.
Spiritually it is more difficult.
Directions are just not easy to find! There is no “A to Z” for living life. Spiritual people in general, and Christians specifically, are not terribly helpful, kind, or relevant when responding to people in distress. It often seems like telling people why they should not be in this part of town is more important than pointing them to their destination.
Attitude is key however it is often my attitude which will ensure I never reach my destination! Every event in life seems to set a new course. As I go along each event is traumatic and results in a modification to my course. After event and more events, my life appears to be set on a random destination.
For directions, the Bible is the chart. Great details, but it doesn’t tell you how to sail!
If I want to stay on course there is only one way. See myself as God sees me. Let God set the course and guide the steps.
