Knowing the rules is critical if one wants to win. Metaphorically this applies to everything in life! Are you are taking care of the special relationship? Have you checked recently? Do you know what alternatives are available to you in taking the relationship to an even higher level? Have you openly assessed your commitment?
I am not suggesting that the “game” metaphor is the final definition of life. It isn’t, yet “games” contains many vital aspects to help guide an assessment of our willingness to experience everything life offers. First, rules or cause/effect forces. You can argue with them but they are what they are. Second, multiple players; we are not in this alone no matter how selfish or single minded we try to be. Third, the way I interact with you impact your life, others, and even me. Fourth, the way one interacts determines how we are playing the game. Depending on one’s viewpoint, you can play the game fairly or not. Fifth and finally, there is the matter of winning.
For many the last point is the problem and turning point. I dare you to define “winning” in a life context! Embedded in the question are key words; freedom, choice, self versus community. Ultimately the truthfulness of our answers to our definition of winning, the link between heart desire and walk will tell our soul and others if we want to be part of a community or live and make it on our own. There is the ultimate freedom for each to choose their destiny!
As in all sports it is interesting to understand how others played. Jesus was quite clear. “The Father loves me: because I freely lay down my life. And so I am free to take it up again. No one takes it from me. I lay it down of my own free will. I have the right to lay it down; I also have the right to take it up again. I received this authority personally from my Father.” (John 10.17, 18)
Our steps today are part of our answer.
