Writers are often reminder to keep their writing simple. “Write for fifth graders” is a mantra repeated again and again over time. Even the seasoned writer is reminded that things are becoming too complex for the reader. This challenge grows when one moves into the spectrum of conversation, new ideas, and leadership. Saying things simply is not easy! How do you take a complex problem and reduce it to its essence? In cooking reduction is as much an art form as it is a technique. Exactly when does one stop? Is there flexibility is eliminating the excess while retaining the critical core? Will the person experiencing the result recognize the beginning? Should they?
One can use the simple process of “connecting the dots” to explore the results. Can one, with insight and hindsight, understand what is happening and learn? Is it possible to use the experience to change the future? Does the time engaged bring hope? I find the process of connecting Truth’s dots is filled hope, energy, and excitement. Yet I am not always the most willing participant. I am fortunate to have friends who challenge me to link truth with clarity, change with hope, and differences with compassion. Because of their belief in life’s importance I am a richer person.
In Jesus’ day there was a simple interchange where confusion could have reigned. Without giving up the plot the simple beginning triggered a follow-the-dots experience. “The disciples said, ‘Master, if he's gone to sleep, he'll get a good rest and wake up feeling fine.’ Jesus was talking about death, while his disciples thought he was talking about taking a nap.” (John 11.12, 13)
I found myself following the dots in several conversations last night. As I begin today I can see reminders of God’s touch all around me. I know Divinity is reaching out to you and me. Today is our opportunity to let the Spirit connect the dots in our life. It is time to pause and hear God speak. Courage; the journey of hope, clarity, and compassion can be bumpy!
