It is na?ve to believe facts will change belief. It is childish to think logic will automatically win the day. Even when you bring great facts, brilliant logic, and stunning clarity together there is still a reasonable likelihood nothing will change. In order to believe you have to trust. Did man land on the moon? Did a young woman sail solo around the world less than seventy-two days? Does God care about you, me, or anything? Even if everything is backed with unlimited amounts of testimonies, clear understanding of words and their intent, some don’t believe.
Initially I was skeptical. I couldn’t see how anyone could doubt God’s existence and engagement in life. Two things have convinced me the doubt is alive, well, and in many quarters growing. First, I am convinced of the sincerity of many who express their doubts and fears. In listening to their voices I find an authenticity which forced me to take a long hard look in the mirror. Second, in looking at the mirror’s reflection of my life I find my behavior saying something my heart never acknowledged! I often don’t believe. I often carry significant doubts. There are many moments, even days when I do not trust.
In dealing with reality I find two steps are essential. There are others, but unless I deal with these, the rest remain unresolved. First, understanding and acknowledging the facts begins the process of becoming open to something new. I’m not the first. Even in Jesus day, after “all these God-signs he had given them and they still didn't get it, still wouldn't trust him.” (John 12.37) Doubt and a lack of trust are universal.
Second, take a decision in being open to an experience. Openly and consciously take in all that is beautiful and loving. Let your soul be touched by all that is good. Understand the gift given to everyone unconditionally. See God and the opportunity to share with the Divine in making a difference today.
From trust flows belief. Giving away from we are given births peace, happiness, and hope.
