Sacred Steps

It is an incredible when you know you are watching history being made.  Recently I have seen several events which I believe will be true footnotes of this era.  Among the smaller, probably minor bits of trivia, will be the emergence of a new generation of athletes who understood and appreciated the steps they follow.  The current Wimbledon champion has a solid grasp of the game’s traditions, rituals, and saints.  He finds inspiration in their achievements.  He continues to pay respect to their work ethic and talent.  He is genuinely honored to be considered with them.
 
He isn’t the first.  As one scans the best of the best each carries the traditions created long before they entered the game.  Cycling, motor racing, bike racing, golf, and baseball all have great examples.  When I look beyond sports I find students of history are often great leaders and ambassadors of their passion.  They seem to understand the core of what made others great before them.  They celebrate, revel in their achievements!  At the same time they strive to take things to even high levels and greater vistas.
 
You and I have the same opportunity in the journey we travel.  There are others who have struggled along this path.  Even in the specialization rampant today there is a common center which binds us together.  We are on a sacred mission.  The saints have broken down some walls but others remain.  I wonder if I appreciate the potential that lies within your heart and mine.  We can be the inspiration for those which will come in the future.
 
The heart of what can be rests in a simple idea.  You and I exist, walk, and even run in the heart of God.  Jesus captured it well; “I in them and you in me.  Then they'll be mature in this oneness, and give the godless world evidence that you've sent me and loved them in the same way you've loved me.” (John 17.23)
 
This is a sacred invitation to a special journey.  It is filled with greatness, purpose, and hope.
