A friend reached out and asked me if we could catch up for a chat. It has been awhile. I suspect it is a reflection of different companies, life priorities, and friendship circles. I looked back, remembering his enduring sense of hope, ability to dig into what he was responsible for while ignoring the rest, and willingness to laugh.
As we worked to coordinate a time and place to catch up, I realized he personality had its marks over every step of the process. It started with a transparency and resilient commitment to a goal without being obsessed on how one got there. I found myself looking and watching, enjoying the clear view of where he wanted to end up while neither of us knew what was coming next in the conversation. If I tried to describe it I would use words that life in the moment revealed the steps that would take us to the destination.
As we sat down, there was a wonderful sense of appreciation on both sides to be where we were. There was a tangible feeling to go with the words that said thank-you for reconnecting. I could see a spark in the eye, and enjoyment in the moment that was a powerful truth statement of intent.
Our conversation naturally moved from the past into the present and the challenges at hand. Normally I would look for the punch line of need. It could take the form of a request for intervention, or standing with another in the process to come. On this occasion it was neither. The question was one of insight and alternatives. How and why were far more important than what. In the end, I do not think I was asked or offered an answer to what he should do.
I look back and realized I have witnessed a model of interacting with God. Being together is a reason to celebrate. Asking why and listening with the heart leads one to see things differently. I left feeling more complete; “God majestic, praise abounds in our God-city!” (Psalm 48.1)
