I am working with an individual that could potentially become a colleague. In the short time we have had together, I have been reminded of an attribute that is often hard to find in the workplace; blunt and honest candor.
I am not talking about feedback where one must think and analyze first, otherwise the meaning may not be seen. Feedback in this situation is clear, concise, and to the point. I am not talking about messaging with multiple meanings and inferences. The messaging is direct and focused. To ensure the words are received as intended, they are delivered with enough space (silence) that there is time to embrace, question, and clarify. Conversation intended to improve the quality is always welcomed. Affirmation and confirmation accepted.
My first reaction was one of refreshment. My energies levels expanded and strengthened. New possibilities and opportunities came into focus. Hope danced in the conversation that followed and stayed with us as we took the next steps forward.
As I start a new day reflecting on the potential opportunities, I am struck by the areas of my life that always benefit from this kind of candor. I read the Psalmist words, realizing that he was equally blunt; “My God! I’ve had it with them! Blow them away! Tumbleweeds in the desert waste.” (Psalm 83.13) My God loves this kind of conversation! I can hear the Divine whisper, “Finally! One can work with honesty and candor. Now, the possible is possible.”
Reminders that I am leaving with my heart and mind include the following.
Candor always starts within. If one cannot be candid and honest with one’s self, it is impossible to be candid and honest with anyone else.
Candor is not the ultimate answer. It is a first step one needs to take cautiously. One starts with candor and reflection. One listens with openness while being candid about one’s bias and cherished beliefs.
Candor is dangerous, sometimes lethal. With one’s self, be careful to not careless destroy one’s self. With others, remember; well intentioned candor can still hurt and tear down.
