Castle of Les Baux is an ancient fortress sitting on a rocky mountain in the middle of Provence France. It is a protected site with a mix of old and new as well as several nice restaurants. With a great meal behind us, I stood with a friend looking out on the countryside with olive trees, vineyards, herbal gardens, and farmhouses. We were buffeted by a relentless wind carrying the scents from the plain below. As I reflected, I could hear voices in the wind calling for compassion, care, and community.
The voices of that afternoon are still with me. Triggers that call them back include the smell of Provence herbs, dishes we shared, and the echo of conversations with friends.
My trip to Provence was lane-changing. The voices which emerged during this trip spoke of a calling within me. At its heart, was the call to contribute to positive change in the lives of the people and communities I am a part of. The reminders are like the castle winds, relentless whispers of opportunities for more.
Conversations are like the wind until they are put into action. The old observation says it one way; “You can get by with almost anything if you front it with eloquent talk about God and his law.” (Romans 2.23). Everything changes when what one hears is revealed through a decision.
One’s decision to act is never “one and done”. Each step is part of a greater journey. Much as the wind continues to slowly reshape the outcrop remains of the castle, the choice I hold in the moment is an opportunity to take a step forward. The size of the step is not near as important as the intent and learning which follows. Positive intent, always learning, and growth is the heart of living life to the maximum.
One may feel alone, however, remember how the wind touches everyone in its path. There are others on the journey with us. Taking a hand, sharing the load, and having time for the other come with hearing the calling for more.
