The optical shop was tight. There was very little room for anyone to move, especially when there were more than eight customers present at a time. As my sense of being trapped kicked in, I looked for the exit options. I only found one sign and one direction hidden in neon. As I look through, I could see myself at a decision point that included the past, present, and future, with an interesting mix of all of them in the moment.
Life is found in the moment that is now, even as I look to the past for guidance. As an artist reminds me, part of the attraction of looking back is the confidence that comes from having got through it all. Whatever I might think or say, I know I made it! Life reminds me of the usefulness of learning from experience. The whispers continue, inviting me to let go when I have learned and embraced what is useful. The voice that reminds me of my aunt when I was young resonates across the generations. “Don’t always be asking, ‘Where are the good old days?’ Wise folks don’t ask questions like that.”(Ecclesiastes 7.10). Life is found in this moment, this reflection, and this choice of what I will do with what I have and what I know.
Life can be confusing. Seeing with clarity is easier with truth references and trusted friends. Whispers gently call me to attention; Choose friends and truth with care and consideration. Not everything is what it seems. Even those who have been with you for a long time may not be authorised to guide and influence. In my freedom, I will choose who I give access to my heart and soul. As motivating as confusion often is, I am accountable for my choices and the actions that follow.
Life is our opportunity. I know it is obvious, and yet often I squander the opportunity I have in the moment. With the right view, assisted so I see the truth, I stand out in the open. Everything is possible.
