I love to walk, especially when I am trying to get from point A to B in a city. If there is a way, even though it might carry a chance of getting lost, then it is an option we should pursue. Yesterday was one of those days. Carli and Krista were checking out the photo opportunities in London. I was the lucky cameraman for their quest. As we finished up at Westminster and Big Ben the question came “what’s next”? We had two objectives. First, find one of the Queen’s horsemen. Second, get from where we were to the tube stop where everyone was meeting for dinner. There was one catch; Carli wanted us to minimize (eliminate) the walking. I looked and realized the Queen’s horseman was one third of the way to the tube. Perfect!
Carli didn’t realize what was happening until we got fifty yards past the horseman. As Trafalger Square came into focus she turned on me exclaiming that the whole process was a set-up to accomplish my goal of walking until we dropped. I pleaded innocence to no avail.
Often I find myself walking in Carli’s shoes. I am absolutely convinced that there is a secret agenda for my path. It cannot be a simple as it seems. Things must be more complicated, complex, and sinister. Obviously agendas rule! Yet often the agendas that are simple, direct, and full of truth are the ones with extreme power. In this context what is the agenda of my life? Is there a point? Do things link together?
Anything unplanned, unmanned, or unintentional will, most likely, end up be driven and shaped by the god of self. To move beyond self requires intentional commitment. I see a model in how to start. The simple words in prayer of “Father, it's time. Display the bright splendor of your Son so the Son in turn may show your bright splendor.” (John 17.1) gives us beginning of getting from A to B to C. Today is a window filled with intent and discovery.
