I look north from the lobby window, focused on the buildings in Dubai’s Media City district and beyond. I remembered my motorcycle riding instructors’ repeated advice, “Look where you want to go.” It was an interesting point to consider. What did my eyes start? What came next, and where did they end up?
As I reflected, looking for my mind’s answers that reflected what my heart already knew, an old observation haunted me. “We work to feed our appetites; meanwhile, our souls go hungry.” (Ecclesiastes 6.7)
The starting point of everything is Divinity’s light resident within. When I begin my journey by taking the time to nourish my heart and soul, I lay a foundation of community, compassion, and care that I can build upon. There is a connection between the regular cadence of soul food and the opportunities that follow. As I looked out the window, I could feel the drift in my vision. It took me a while to see and focus on the candle at my feet. In lighting the candle within, I rediscover the flame that reveals my path and the next step.
When my vision stops short, the only thing I am certain of is that I will never make it to my destination. I am not the centre, I am merely the starting point in my line of sight to community, and the larger story I am a part of. With a light lit and shining within, my vision looks outside and onwards, taking in the path I have an opportunity to take. I know I will have choices, decisions, and actions that reflect my values and priorities. Each is an expression of what I have within in the form of a gift to those I meet in the moment. I am called to care. I am invited to act. I can contribute to the journeys of those I share the path with.
I see a bigger story ahead of me. I know I have a part to play. I have kindness, care, and compassion with me on today’s ride.
