Interior architects have a plan with a view. As I walked through the different rooms on the hotel’s ground floor, I found myself in a classroom. Each expression the architectural team left gave insight into the element’s role and purpose. I could feel an overall sense of being accepted and welcomed. Peace, harmony, and an open invitation dominated my senses. As I considered each element, I imagined the thinking behind the designer’s assignment.
Life is a mosaic with endless expressions. One of the invitations I wake up holding each day is to walk with the certainty that the day is my opportunity to write and express myself. At a principal level, each day brings variations on the other. Within the details, individuals, context, emotions, and opportunities, each moment within the day is unique. With each step, I find myself with a calling to use my abilities to bring care, kindness, and compassion to others as well as myself.
Everyone in the moment has a role to play. I hear my calling to make a difference. The models and examples have been laid out across the generations. When I consider that “The assigned task of a high priest is to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and it’s no different with the priesthood of Jesus” (Hebrews 8.3), I realise I have within myself the potential to gift others with the experience of belonging, acceptance, and support.
Acts of care and kindness create rewards. I often revert to old thinking from my childhood when rewards were a gold star or a certificate. The fleeting emotional high from these rewards is replaced by a sustained high that flows from words and acts expressed with unconditional kindness. Doing the right thing for the right reason is a reward within itself.
The designs of one’s heart will be revealed through the choices in the moment. I share far more than I realise, especially in my decisions and responses. I see each expression as an indicator reminding me to hold onto my ideals. Each moment is a fresh opportunity to share my heart.
