The Shelby Cobra occasionally parks next to where I used to park. It is an impressive example of a car with a big V-8, minimal instruments to distract you, and, in this case, rollbars to mitigate the inevitable of what can happen when one pushes the car to the edge. I love the feeling this car gives to those who appreciate her heritage. It is friendly. I always sense a warning that comes with it. If I ever were to drive her, I must listen intently, pay attention, and take care in everything I do.
I look to my day ahead, thinking of the Cobra and wondering what it would be like to drive her today. I know today is not the day. The lessons that she left with me linger, reminding me of the usefulness of the mantras in informing and shaping the moments ahead.
Listening is the starting point for every conversation and action. My natural tendency is to act, especially because I can anticipate what is going to happen. Old words take me to the negative warning, “Don’t turn a deaf ear as in “the bitter uprising,” that time of wilderness testing!” (Hebrews 3.8) The Cobra is a reminder of each moment’s invitation to be fully present in the moment, aware of the sounds and nuances, and always listening to understand.
Attention to life’s details reveals the story within the story. I like to move quickly and appreciate getting things done with speed. Intensity is one of my best friends. I have come to appreciate the value and intensity that comes with slowing down, taking in the details, and responding with informed awareness. I find the textures and details of life’s artwork in the details. I begin to feel the car and the designer’s intent. I am fully present, responding to life’s calling.
Acting with care begins with intention, purpose, and motive. This combination gives me the strength and courage to realise my highest calling: caring for Divinity’s children. Every moment is a window into my soul and an unconditional gift to others.
