When one takes an intense, long, realistic look at life, it’s easy to be cynical and depressed. Anywhere you look there is pain, anguish, and despair. Individuals, adults and children are dying! Individuals are losing their lives because they do not have enough food to sustain life. Individuals, people like you and I, are victims of the actions and choices of others. Lives have and are being destroyed. Lives have and continue to be changed forever. Lives are mangled, exploited, and manipulated.
The facts are there, here, in small towns and large cities, in religious settings and secular, and in large communities as well as relationships however small. The facts can be found within individuals, the outcome of how treat their souls and bodies. Yet this isn’t the whole story. In the midst of the negative is the positive. In the midst of despair there is a call – to one and all. We, you and I, are called to make a difference.
When the question is asked, “what's God waiting for? Let him get a move on so we can see it. Whatever The Holy of Israel has cooked up, we'd like to check it out.’” (Isaiah 5.19) We have a call to act. The cry is loud and clear – compassion is within our reach! We can touch the lives of those around us. We can be messengers bringing the reality of mercy and love to those longing for the touch of God.
We may not understand how Divinity is encouraging us to act. As imperfect, error-prone, or weak we might be, we can act. I find myself struggling with the paradox; I need help myself. God knows this and is encouraging others to be messengers on my behalf. My calling exists regardless of my need.
I find real life in the process of living out within a community. We are members. We’re engaged. We hold an invitation to be Divine agents. Individual views of Power do not need to be sources of conflict. Each can deliver within their view actions of compassion, mercy, and love.
