Destinations are not always easy to see, much less get to. It’s as if we know where we are going. As a result, reality doesn’t seem to matter. We live in a virtual world where many destinations, goals, and outcomes are more a state of mind than an actual place of standing. We “be” independently of where we “are”.
I continue to find the steps in getting to a destination are more important than the destination itself. It is as if the steps actually define our arrival. We may think we know where we are gong but we don’t. We can plan, strive, and connive, but in the end it is the small steps of the day which determine the place where we find ourselves. The process of goals, outcomes, and destinations is not fruitless – knowing where one wants to be and go is extremely important. Yet it is the steps which take us there that determine everything.
Two ingredients are crucial to your journey and mine. First, we need honest feedback. Knowing where we have been and where our past is taking us ix extremely important. Far too often we are like Jacob. The warning was clear; “The Day is coming when Jacob's robust splendor goes pale and his well-fed body turns skinny. The country will be left empty, picked clean as a field harvested by field hands. She'll be like a few stalks of barley left standing in the lush Valley of Rephaim after harvest, or like the couple of ripe olives overlooked in the top of the olive tree, or the four or five apples that the pickers couldn't reach in the orchard.” (Isaiah 17.4-6) But Jacob didn’t listen. Are we?
The second has equal value. Examine, reflect, and step in a way which holds true to the value and priorities you hold closest to your heart. Yesterday is important, it tells a story. Today is ultimately the only thing which matters. This moment in time – what step will you take and why? Everything depends on the answer.
Today is a great destination.
