In the summer heat, the shade from the palm was welcomed. As I waited, I listened to the air and the unique sound it created as it wove its way through the fronds. If one stripped everything back and removed all touches of man’s contribution to the scene, a variation of the palm would likely still be where it was. Palms are native to this region. Their fruit is an integral part of the local diet. Their role comes with purpose and function. Even when they go unnoticed, palms create a space where I can take shelter and comfort on a hot afternoon.
In the quiet peace, life slowed down and came into focus. I could see how the palm represented the calm at the centre of my being. From this point, one can venture out and into the world rested, restored, and repurposed. Life whispered reminders of the importance of finding the palm at the centre of my existence. As the lesson unfolded, I embraced the guides for today.
One’s heart and soul are filled with a symbolic palm in its centre. It is more than just filling in the space where I am incomplete. It is an awareness, understanding, and ultimately embrace that in my centre, “we have a high priest who perfectly fits our needs: completely holy, uncompromised by sin, with authority extending as high as God’s presence in heaven itself.” (Hebrews 7.26). With this insight, I can feel the connection between me and Divinity. I begin to see and understand the significant story I am a part of.
Fulfilling one’s purpose can include quietness and silence. There was a gentle sound of movement through the palm. I suspect it would have gone unnoticed if one had not listened for it. Hearing its unique melody, it was as if the palm transported my heart to a place of refreshment and recovery. I was safe. I was protected. From this place, anything is possible.
There is more. Life does not end when one is under its protection. This is a place of fresh beginnings.
