The line of trees in the distance told me all I needed to know about where I was. It is a scene I have periodically looked at for years. My views what I am seeing have changed with Life’s guidance. I now see what I initially saw as uniform and predictable as harmony. My initial reaction spoke to indifference and weakness. I now see the scene as representing community, harmony, and collaboration. What I ignored in the past is now a trigger for reflection and recommitment.
I can see the reasons for both perspectives. The difference that drives what I see now is the value and power I find in one aspect – harmony. When harmony is present, power is in the wings. Nothing can stand its way when harmony is partnered with care and purpose!
Harmony is found in the strengths we see and celebrate in each other. My early views of harmony centred on uniform beliefs and practices. The trees are each unique in their shape, capabilities, and role. Yes, they share many things in common. Their strength is defined by combining what they share and what makes each different. Even as my eyes are drawn to one tree that stands out in contrast to the others, I take courage in the role each plays in their purpose. This community is strong because of what is seen and noticed when included with what is hidden in the early morning mist.
Harmony is not always natural. The strongest harmony is intentional, forged through dialogue and debate, uncomfortable learning, and growth. The words of invitation and warning from the past are still relevant; “Work at getting along with each other and with God. Otherwise, you’ll never get so much as a glimpse of God.” (Hebrews 12.14). When we pursue our best, individually and as a family, we open the doors to harmony.
Harmony is an invitation and an opportunity. When I am at my best, I am in harmony with others committed to compassionate living. When I make a difference, I am part of we, not I.
