Sometimes it is hard to see beyond, right now. Everything is hitting and hitting hard. Deadlines, relationships in the cusp, and impossible goals all come together in the chaos we know as life. It is difficult to see. It is impossible to understand what could be other than what is. Today is one of those days.
I find, with gray hairs and sleep, we hold the capability to see well beyond our understanding. There is an intuitive sense of what could be. The body seems to know support is available, if only it can muster the courage to accept what is already there.
In these moments I find myself asking a series of rhetorical questions. They always start in the same place; “What will you have to say on Judgment Day, when Doomsday arrives out of the blue? Who will you get to help you? What good will your money do you?” (Isaiah 10.3) And the questions don’t stop here. “If money isn’t going to solve the problem, what and whom do I hold onto in times of distress? Why am I here? Where am I going?
The answers are quite simple. Yet, in times of unanswered questions, they are illusive and problematic to grasp. First, we are here to live – really, truly, and completely live in the present. Second, we are here to be part of a wonderful community. We can see the warts, blemishes, and weaknesses, but can we see its beauty, strength, and mystery? Third, we are here to be partners with Divinity. Our forefathers made some mistakes, deadly ones. Divinity has a plan of recreation and we are an integral part of the process.
I write these words with more than a little faith. Frankly, I cannot see the horizon right now. I wonder if the blizzard when consumed New York yesterday is metaphorically raging on it my life and yours. Yet I know my faith is true. I am confident Divinity has a heart open for me, engaged in our lives, and able to see beyond the moment at hand.
