Returning to an old and favourite Japanese restaurant was a special treat. I had only considered it when I was reminded of the fresh ingredients, care, and attention to detail by two current fans. The arrival of my Chirashi bowl order was an overwhelming treat. Every piece of fish was an extravagant indulgence. Candidly, I wasn’t sure where to start. As I hesitated, the moment morphed into a meditation reflection on the indulgent opportunities in my life.
My greatest indulgences are unrelated to money. In return for the gifts of time and unconditional acceptance, a grandchild’s laughter and sparking eyes repair and strengthen my heart. It is a relationship that feels like an indulgence that overwhelms my senses in the best ways. The conversations filled with love infuse my being with energy and courage. On one hand, the setting, words and actions are so simple. On the other, I know it is a priceless experience that creates memories I will forever treasure. The exchange of value comes from one heart to another, one soul for the other.
Indulgence has become a sustainable proposition. I have been privileged to see and, at times, experience the world’s indulgence. Fine food, lavish attention, and exclusive settings often form the traditional foundation. In thinking through my indulgences over the past week, I read an old observation across the centuries with a different eye; “By faith, Moses, when grown, refused the privileges of the Egyptian royal house.” (Hebrews 11.24) In responding to a different path, the outcome was a larger and more significant story that he was able to be a part of. I feel the joy and sense of participating in this indulgence as a step into a new chapter infused with hope and filled with unknown possibilities.
Indulgence need not be exclusive. After seeing how bling and money exclude many, I walked through a different doorway and discovered my opportunity to indulge. There are no filters; it is open to everyone. The currency is openness and care. The toll is presence and respect. Now is my time to indulge.
