Stepping back in time is helpful. As I landed in Ho Chi Minh City, I found myself traveling back through several different dimensions. The city was hustling on a steamy weekday night. The luxury fashion stores and trendy car dealers mixed well with the bright local neon. If I merely looked at the façade, I could be in any number of cities around the world. Yet, mixed in with the view were the hustling motorbikes, friendly taxi drivers, and individuals on the sidelines – sitting, watching, and chatting.
There was a thread that took me along the development path. Making money, hustling, and deals are part of this city’s DNA. I think of the journey I am on and I hear the advice of different sages across the years. Their words stay with me along with an awareness of how much I have ignored.
Another reflection reminded me of the different plans I have carried with me. Aspirations are powerful motivators. We reach for things greater than ourselves. Along the way, we receive gifts of guidance. Our progress is a combination of hard work, awareness, and life’s response.
In the mix, I realized that the past is still present. The sins of our fathers lingers. The outcome of old choices is still unfolding. Given what I know now, what would I change? If I would change it then, what prevents me from changing it now?
There are sharp edges to my reflection. What have/am I doing with the counsel I have? How willing am I to walk with another, living, learning, and sharing where it is helpful?
Will I ignore the wisdom I have been given, taking on the role of the centurion? “The centurion set Paul’s warning aside and let the ship captain and the ship owner talk him into trying for the next harbor.” (Acts 27.12)
Will I embrace wisdom, willingly sharing it as others ask or need?
There is a chaotic energy in Ho Chi Minh City. The city rarely seems to sleep. It will consume or infuse according to how we respond.
