“We didn’t fight for this land; we didn’t work for it – it was a gift! You gave it, smiling as you gave it, delighting as you gave it.” Psalm 44.2
You cannot buy certain things in life, they are absolutely priceless and free. The smile from a child, the look from a friend, the freedom with absolute acceptance, and joy as one experiences unconditional love are things in my basket I could never afford. Often the small things reach out and grab my heart with this truth. I find special gift lying at my heart as I joust with Whitney who is nine going on nineteen. I experience the reality and beauty of parenting when I share a moment with Carli who is quickly becoming a peer. Gifts given that are free, with a price tag that exceeds all amounts of money.
As I watch Whitney in action yesterday, full of life, bubbling over at the seams, I found myself understanding why she gives. She gives because of who she is – smiling because of life, delighting with what is not what could be, reflecting all the joy and love that comes her way. She does not realize what she gives back to those who give. She has not idea of the value of her gifts; it never occurs to her that she might count it. I don’t know if she would change if she realizes her gift’s value – I would like to think not.
God knows the value of his gift, yet it doesn’t change his actions or plan. God fully comprehends that we cannot afford what he offers, yet he offers it anyway. God knows that we will frequently waste his gift, spoiling it for others, and still he makes it available.
God promised and he will deliver because of who he is. God’s character is consistent and deep. Our behavior will never change God behavior towards us.
The question is what will I do with God’s gift? Accepting the gift will introduce me to true joy; however, the choice is always yours and mine.
