When one knows, they know. Clearly, certain aspects of beauty, inspiration, and truth are not “provable”. On the extremes the choice is clear, but at the “best” end it is a matter of nuances and fine degrees. The difference is, in the end, one found in your emotional conclusion. It is as if you “know” the answer; a gut conclusion, feeling, or a sense. Experience suggests one should pay a lot more attention than we do, or at least I.
A key measure is the impact beauty has on those nearby. If you find people smiling, at peace, or filled with hope, one knows with a high degree of certainty that beauty and inspiration are in the vicinity. If you find people working in harmony, living in peace, or celebrating diversity, you know truth is in residence. If you find yourself inspired, walking with a sense of awe, or just being with a sense of interest and curiosity, one knows they are in Divinity’s presence.
One common element found in each example is the presence of freedom. People are allowed, probably better described as encouraged to be themselves. In the midst of adversity it is as if the “lambs will graze as if they owned the place, kids and calves right at home in the ruins.” (Isaiah 5.17) Individuals know they are safe. Individuals know they are respected. Each understands the freedom they hold.
I love the experience of being with people who treasure and value diversity and freedom. The experience of this type of community restores, nurtures, and gives life to one’s soul. The time passes as if there is no clock. One is transfixed during the experience, emerging with a renewed sense of hope.
We do not have to rely on others to be part of this vision and experience. We, you and I, can create this in and among the people within our community. You and I can be lightening rods for Divinity. We can be God’s catalyst. The dream begins with a simply smile, a gift of forgiveness, and by sharing compassion.
