The restaurant sign said it all. With a sense of irony, the air conditioner unit, satellite dishes, external ductwork and cabling, and various buildings of man’s design completed the visual story. Life’s answer in a glance. Take a big bite, consume what you can, be comfortable, and let it ride. Was this all that life was meant to be?
I have spent a lifetime of searching and listening, so I know there is more to life than yesterday’s ironic scene. Even as I walked, the sense of hope that could be found in the neighbourhood was tangible. With the scars of past devastation still visible, there were signs that better days are ahead. As I consider my alternatives today, I find myself holding onto the following.
Kindness is one of life’s most powerful forces. In a space where I feel pulled in many directions, kindness in all its forms stands out defensively and as a positive way to take on the battle. Purpose, mission, and even visions can be driven by kindness. When I add compassion and empathy to the mix, I find myself walking with conviction and courage.
It is never enough to think, one must act. I have great dreams. They will remain like vapor until I take them into action. The models to follow come with headwinds and challenges. Paul’s reminder is worth noting; “The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does. He acted to set things right in this life of contradictions where I want to serve God with all my heart and mind but am pulled by the influence of sin to do something totally different.” (Romans 7.25) Divinity’s willingness to help only comes alive with my decision to act with kindness.
My decisions and actions today tell the story of what is most valuable. My prayer is that it is more than a big bite of life. Divinity offers to be with me at every step. Today is my time to act, learn, grow, and begin moving towards a better future. One step at a time.
