As I walked towards my car parked at the mall, a supporting pillar caught me off guard. As often as I have walked by, I just realised that it was providing support at an angle. It was not even close to being straight! I paused, reflecting, memories of my freshman engineering classes replaying in my head. If the angle was just off vertical it could have been a mistake. This was obvious and intentional.
I found myself thinking of all the unnatural pillars in my life. With time, I have come to appreciate the unusual, off-centred way Divinity continues to support my life. Care, kindness, and love are experiences authored by individuals of all shapes, sizes, and types. There are no one-size criteria for the writers who contribute to the stories in our lives.
In caring, for individuals, communities, and nature, one has an opportunity to discover and experience the many ways Divinity cares for us. It is in the obvious and less so. It can be found in the grand as well as the minute. Each act of care feeds one’s soul, opening the door to being on the receiving end of Paul’s prayer; “May the God of green hope fill you up with joy, fill you up with peace, so that your believing lives, filled with the life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit, will brim over with hope!” (Romans 15.13)
In kindness, expressed through words and actions shaped by compassion, formed without thought for recompense, one begins to understand the pillars that sustain one’s life. Without Divine kindness, I would not be able to face the day. When kindness is lost, I find myself in darkness. I am looking for light and hope. Kindness is the expression of both.
In love, my heart and soul experience the truth of unconditional acceptance and belonging. Joy is discovered and celebrated.
As natural as the pillars are, it is in being open to every type of expression, that I rediscover Divinity and all her expressions through the individuals sharing the journey with her. Everyone a Divine pillar.
